Why was the first corneal transplantation a milestone in medical history?
The cornea, which has five distinct layer, is the transparent outer coating of the eye. In the past, damage to the cornea was a common cause of blindness. A corneal transplantation is an operation done on the eye, to replace a damaged cornea, with healthy one that has been donated by someone.
The first attempts to perfprms corneal transplantation- all unsuccessful- date from the nineteenth century. Success finally camein 1905 when a Moravian doctor Eduard Zrim transplanted a child donar's cornea to the eye of a chemical burn victim.
Corneal transplantation has saved many people from blindness. Today, it is performed using lasers and is a safe, and most effective way to prevent and treat blindness.
